I just picked up these two trees over the weekend for $10 each. I wanted to give this species a try as I don't have any of this type. So far I have only done the work shown in the pictures above. I was able to remove the large roots and leave most of the fine rooting intact. I know I need to reduce even more of the oversized roots, but I didn't want to stress the trees too much right now. I plan on leaving them in the water for a year or two to swell the trunks and then work on transitioning them to quality soil and performing a hard chop in a couple of growing seasons.

I plan on measuring the trunks every few months with string to track how much they have grown. I will update later when I have something interesting to share.

Leave them in water for a year? Don't think I've heard of that before. Where'd you pick them up at? I notice your license plate is VA, what area do you live in? I'm a noVA resident myself.

Well it's not really the most common practice. Some have had success making the trunks swell and flare out...I'm just experimenting and hoping it works.

I'm originally from Dickenson County. It's a really rural area. I'm in the Army and have been stationed in SC for the last 2 years. Not sure where I'll go next so I'm taking advantage of 9 month growing seasons while I can!
