I planted oaks, and plumb trees last fall. The squirrels love the idea. This seed was kept in the fridge all winter. A black locust, years from now, it will be a really nice tree.

Nice little tree you got there ;)

The leaves look small so I think it may be suited to be a bonsai. Obviously over time, and a fair lot of it.

Yes, a lot of time, smaller branches on black locust, like to twist and turn, a lot. Which may make a good structure, without leaves. The leaf fronds do get a little bigger, but that might be easy to compensate for.

Besides, they make the best cooking wood, slow steady heat, with a pleasant, not to strong of smoke. We have a really old one in our back yard. It's out grown it's thorns, except in a new branch, and doesn't ever put out any seed. I went to the park for mine. There's a new thornless variety, people like to use in cityscapes, the small leaves don't need raking, and wash down drains easily.

part of the "new" branch

here's a good one I saw online, it's young enough to have all it's thorns.

Just for completeness.. these are compound (?) leaves. Meaning: The actual leave is one of those stems with all the small leaflets on them. So actually, one could say the leaves are really big :).

Still, resonable for bonsai, as the leaves give the impression of a branch with many smaller leaves. But it will have to be a big tree, to get any refinement.
