I think you are referring to the Larix spp. They drop their leaves in winter ;)

Nice work! I understand the difficulties involved in growing from seed, as I have attempted several species in the more recent years. Even after only a few years growth, a little wringing and creatively, your seedlings could well become really cool Mame. If I may ask, what can you tell me about the gray stones in the background of your photos. They look like a smooth ying stone...or are they your finds? Just curious, as many bonsai enthusiasts, like yourself, are always on the lookout for interesting stones...

Ohw, that's no fun. Why did they die? Did you move them? Trim them back? Anything you can add to help others avoid having the same experience?

i cut the roots in a circle around the tree to stimulate new roots closer to the trunk. 6 weeks later, i tossed a lot of new vertilicer in my garden, as usual. But some pieces stayed hanging between the buds. The buds where burnt and it was more powerful than i thought, also cats love to spray in my garden on that spot particular. The rest was fine except those two.

Update on my seedlings,
Nearly a year has past. I planted a few acres palmatums and 2 japanese spruce, Picea koyamae.
I gave away a lot to clubmembers and the rest ended up in the bin. I didn't have the time or space for it. The pines and larch had a good year, especially my pines gained a lot of grid in the long hot summer. There 1.5 m tall. I have to think, if i am going to cut them this year or the next year. I dug up my alnus last year and i'm a bit lost with that tree. When i'm doing a hard prune, it backbuds on the side branche and sprouts from the roots. I was hoping on some buds low on the main trunk to make a new leader, the nebari is good. So in the spring i will chop it low on the main trunk. The thickest larix wil be dug up this spring and relocate or i will put it in a big wooden crate.
