7 years old is more likely.

Yeah... typical mallsai, bend to the left, bend to the right, strange branch growing upwards at the first bend... and the 'rock' isn't missing either.
I'd remove it or try to get it to grow down - after getting it in full health first.

Actually, I probably would remove the trunk above the first branch and rebuild this plant.

That is up tp you to decide. We do not know what you rplans are with this tree, nor what your image is for this as a bonsai.

Not a bad course of action at all. That might prove to be a very good idea.

I'm with you guys, the branch is almost begging to be the new trunk leader. It is semi-verticle, and still not 100% straight... it also has some leaves growing on it close to where I would cut off the rest of the trunk.
