I did a trunk chop on this s curve Chinese elm last spring and it exploded with growth down below the chop. One of the lower branches seems especially vigorous. It’s just below the wound which I understand can help aid in forming a callous. I’m wondering if it’s growing too large or if I should worry about inverse taper issues further down the road.

Well, there are some branches below the thick one, they will help thickening the trunk below the scar, so maybe reverse taper will not occur.
On the other hand, did you use a concave cutter on the chop above the thick branch? The callous is bulging, and this gives the impression of a reverse taper right there.

I did use a concave branch cutter but it was my first ever trunk chop so it’s possible I didn’t create a perfect wound. Hopefully in time the callous doesn’t look too bulbous. If so I can always reshape the wound with a grafting knife right?
