Just got this juniper bonsai for father's day & was wondering how soon I should think about pruning the roots. It's my 1st Bonsai.

Waiting till spring would be the safest bet.

This spring, next spring or Even the spring after. It is not in a hurry. You decide the need by examining the roots and drainage.

The tree is outside, right?

As Tropfrog says: it needs to be outside or it will die.
Why do you want to prune the roots?

It will not last long if it kept were you took picture, if it is draining then there will be no reason to re pot. Learn how to water and how to prune, do not pinch foliage. out in the sun.

Just let it rest this summer. Afternoon shade, that's the hottest time of the day. Don't push for lots of growth, this summer. Next year, you'll be doing all sorts of pruning, Maybe, not so much growth, then.

It's a balancing act, how much should you let it grow, and when to prune.

And yes junipers can't live inside,

Okie Dokie. Put tree outside, check. Don't worry about the roots for at least a year, check. I have bunny poop tea for fertilizer (my other plants love it). I don't have a permanent garden & I'll be moving in less than a year. Love the tree, don't wanna kill it. Should I put her in a bigger pot? I named her Changchang. Chinese girls name meaning flourish long. Is that weird? Thanks for all the advice! Here's another pic.

Just let it be, bonsai is a marathon, not a sprint., nothing that needs to be done "now". Why would it need a bigger pot?
Soil looks a bit dry though? ( but i can be wrong, pictures are sometimes deceiving...)

Good eye, that was right before I watered. I thought it would take a lot more daily care & figured a bigger pot would alleviate that. But since I appear to be wrong on both counts, never mind. And now, off to do bonsai homework.

Yes, looks dry, it needs full sun and fertiliser to get as much growth this year, then next year you can think about pruning. Do not re pot as that pot is big enough, possibly too big. If you know what you are doing you could even thin out some branches which are shading inner branches, but if you are not sure leave it. There is a good beginners course in the shop here, as well as others.
