Hey everybody,

I'm new to this community and I really need some help.:S My wife got me a commercial bonsai that has a very low "¬" shape profile. The main branch has very little verticle growth before it immediately started growing at a 90-degree angle. There are no other substantial branches that I can use to "shape" the top. I didn't notice this until I started pruning. It looks much better now than when I first got it but it also revealed its shape. Will wiring it reshape it to an almost "S" shape? Is it too late at this point because of how much it has grown with its current shape? I just ordered wires which should be in tomorrow. Also, I know its recommended to do all major changes in early spring. Please let me know what I should do. Below are some pictures.

It’s going to stress the poor plant, but it’s a young one and it would probably be fine, if that’s what you really want to do.
I wouldn’t.

Try to imagine what the plant “would like to be” rather than trying to force it into the shape you think should be the right one.

What I would do with a plant like that is change the pot to a tall one, uncover the upper part of its roots, tilt it and go for a kengai.
It may not be the shape you wanted initially, but IMHO would easily give you a lot more...

As usual, the tree is yours, tho...

You are a genius! This is great advice. I'm totally new to this but I just google "Kengai" and I am amazed at what some have been able to do. That's what I'll do. I'll continue to nurture it. I'll repot it in a taller pot during the spring and try to get a kengai going. Thanks a lot!

I hope it is only inside to take pictures. Junipers and all hardy trees will not survive inside.

I have a Juniperus Horizontalis similar to yours.
Even being against the will of the tree, and having seen a lot of horizontalis and prostata styled as kengai, I have decided to make this one vertical, almost formal. It ended up as moyogi trying to be a formal, but time will tell, it is still young.
Just to present a different point of view here.

Thank you for the different perspective. Would you recommend that I start now if I do decide to reshape it or should I still wait for the spring?

First of all: keep it alive by placing it outside- it will die insdie without any doubt.
Second : there is a time for everything in bonsai, and now ( if you are in the northern hemisphere is not the time to do anyhing). Bonsai is a marathon, not a sprint so take your time to keep your plant alive and look at it- the answer will come...
