What is the timeframe you have in mind for developing this tree?

In other words: Are you looking at getting a nice little tree in 5 years? Or is a 10 year window also acceptable?

If you opt for the longer timeframe:

Pot it deeper: You need more roots in the nebari. that will never happen when it is at the surface. Bury it at least 1/2 inch.

The akward side-branch = sacrifice. Let it shoot a few feet.

Turn the tree so the sacrifice is in the back

In summer trim the main trunk back to the top pair of buds and get slow-growing leader back, with tight internodes.

It is the direction I would take.

I would say let it grow and over the next year look at it every day or so and look for the bonsai lurking trying to get out.

Look at pictures online of good trees and ask yourself if you want that idea for your tree, and how you would do it. Then next spring do what you think works.
