Hello everyone!
I'm new in this amazing bonsai world. I am happy to share with you my first bonsai.

I have been working on it, based on what I read in this forum.

I would like to know your opinion about this Chinese Elm's shape.
I am aware that some branches need to go... but since it has few leaves (but with many new shots) I'm not sure what to do...

Thanks!!!

Hello and welcome
The first thing you need to do is place it outside where it belongs, inside it will die.
Second: do not do anything anymore untill it is healthy and vogorous again. Don't know how much you cut off, or how "empty" it already was, but now it needs to be healthy again first ( and that means outside with it).
You can take away that wire, not doing anything anyway.

Can withstand constant rains?
I have read that branches can't go backwards or towards de viewer, that's why I put the wire, but I understand that maybe it is too soon to put wires if that is what you mean.
Thanks for your help!

... the question is can it withstand your living rooms? The answer is no. I do not see trees in nature with an umbrella....

Where did you read that about the branches? That would mean that you create a 2D tree, with branches only going left and right?
Putting on the wire isn a question of too soon, its a question of useless now.

Dont bellieve everything you read online. Bonsai is an art. Just as there are no rules for how to make a painting or statue there are no rules for bonsai. This art is about creating an image of an old tree in miniature. Go out in your suroundings and look at old trees. Are any of them 2 dimensional?

Thanks Topfrog! Sorry... I meant a branch with an abrupt angle that had nothing to do with the tree design I wanted, that's why I decided to wire it (besides I am learning how to do it).

I've been doing Ikebana for a wile and constant thinking about the "balance" and that branch just make me nervous and I didn't want to cut it.

I have this tree since October 2020. I cut the branches last week and now has 11 new shots.
Hope it prospers!
