Hi I am new at the website but have been doing Bonsai since last Spring and still learning. Thicken a trunk I understand that clip and grow is good method. My question is how much does one clip the first time? Just above the trunk or above the first branches. I have a boungavillea that I would like to thicken the trunk. Please help.

You'll need to do the 'grow' part first. The trunk is far too thin to clip now.

I would put it into a larger pot. It will not thicken any more in that small pot. Then you will have to choose between having floers or pruning for shape. You will not be able to have both, so for a year or two there will be no flowers when you are pruning to get the shape.
What country are you in?
