This thing is out of control. I have clipped branches off this thing already 3 times this year. I was told by a guy "who knew about bonsai" that this tree wouldn't back bud. hhhmmmm....
the branches grow so fast and thick that they have to be wired when they are very small. you have to be careful not to put any pressure where the branch meets the trunk, or the branch will snap off. Hence the name "judas tree".
It seems that clip and grow is the only way this tree is ever going to make sense at all. I just hope it continues to back bud I can get rid of a few of these branches that aren't working for me.

This tree needs constant attention. If I let the branches grow for longer than a week they are too thick to bend. I'll probably cut it back one more time and them let it grow until next spring..hoping it produces a few more branches higher up.

I agree, this one has a great nebari and strong trunk. I'm guessing once you have given it it's final pruning then leave it until Spring to grow, you would have to really stay on top of wiring the new growth because of the growth habits of the branches? Is this correct?

Wow, more eastern redbud action! :lol: I have one of these growing in my backyard, and can't wait to see how you all handle the unique challenges of the redbud! This is quickly becoming my favorite type of tree (no offense, Phil, you'll always be my first) and now I can hardly wait for mine's trunk to thicken! It has a beautiful structure to start with, and I can't wait to see what you do with it!
