I have a small simsii azalea in a large pot and would like ti move it to a smaller one in order to work on it. It is doing well and is currently flowering. When is the best period to move it? What if I do it now?

Ok, warm climate do you get frost? I would leave it until early spring, if you do it now you will have to remove all flowers and seed pods. You will be doing that after the flowers are finished anyway. I asume you have it outside, in the sun. The other time to re pot is after flowering in June or early July.

No, it can get cold even below 0 Celsius, but doesnt last more than a day or two at any given time.
I’ll wait as you suggest until early spring and also see when flowering stops. I remove the flowers as they come. Thanks for your feedback, I’m sure I will be in touch again.

Every two years, either in spring or after flowering, the azalea should be repotted. Prune the roots with great care because they are very thin and matted and can easily be torn when you try to disentangle them. It is important to use a special soil for azaleas which is lime-free. Pure Kanuma for example is a good azalea soil.

So early spring but DON'T remove the buds.. you won't get flowers than.. rhododendron type make buds that form during a whole growing season

0c is not cold. The best soil is Kanuma, yes, and the best time is after flowering, so depending on when the flowering is finished late June or July. The alternative is early spring. I prefer after flowering unless there is a problem.

So early spring but DON'T remove the buds..

... unless when you want "great spring growth" (bonsaitonight.com/2012/05/18/removing-flower-buds-from-azalea/), which is something you will usually want when you are growing a bonsai that is not established yet - which is what we are talking about in this case.

you won't get flowers than

Correct, and that's the idea. I remove the buds from my apple tree so it doesn't grow flowers - except last year, when I did want to see flowers.
Next year, I'll remove the buds again as I need growth, not flowers.

Exactly. Flowering weakens the tree in general. When the tree is in training, you want all of its energies to be used on growing thicker trunk, more branches etc If you let it flower you will take energies from the tree and will not mature properly
