Should I repot for blackened roots? was created by smcarmen

Hello. It's late July and I am in Washington, DC. I have an 8-year old parrot's beak. It's doing quite well, has quite a bit of new growth, seems overall happy. I repotted it in March, but I did not root prune much as it was my first time and I was unsure about it. Now the tree has some blackened roots (the large roots that sit above the soil) and a black ring about 3/4 inch up the trunk. I don't over water, and it seems to be doing well on all other accounts. Could this be root rot? If yes, what can I do? Do I repot now? I don't want to damage the tree, but I want to be sure that it can survive until next March when I would normally repot it. Thanks!

Welcome!
No, it doesn't look like root rot.
I think the lower trunk and exposed thick roots are being humid for too long (even if you say you are not overwatering it; this is a sign that you may be overdoing the water schedule), but they can be cleaned with a soft toothbrush in a diluted mix of water+vinegar.
Keep us posted on the health of this little tree!

PS - WHY there is a sauce under your pot? It needs air underneath the roots!

As you can see, I've got the same problem.
AND hard water leaving those white calcium deposits on trunks, pots and soil.
I guess I need to clean my JBPs.

Thank you for your reply! I think the saucer might be the problem. It's there to catch the water that drains through the soil when I water, and I often leave it there. This might be causing the humidity problem. I'll remove the saucer and see how it does!
