Hello,

I’ve had my first bonsai tree, a cherry, for almost two years now and it resides in my office with a timed lamp and a timed grow light. I use a humidity tray and it seems to be doing well.

My question is two-fold: if a tree resides inside and does well, does the time of year matter for repotting? It grows very quickly and I must prune back long branches often. I’ve reduced the fertilizer to help slow this.
How can I promote thickening of the trunk? On this subject I’m woefully ignorant. The trunk has remained roughly the same thickness since I purchased it.

By planting it in your garden and letting it grow.

I use a colander, outside.
It works, but not so well as planting it in the ground, as Auk has suggested.
