Can you use kitty litter and what type would be suggested? I live in the United States in zone five.
And a formula, I have lava rock and Pumice..

Use lava+pumice+any organic (peat, pine bark) will do.

google bonsai soil -substrate/terramol/pumice/vermiculite/kitty litter/... enjoy for the next 2 years..
This forum has a lot of info on bonsai soil too, its just too big a topic to explain in a few words...

Cat litter is excellent, but it should be made from Molar clay. In the UK Tescos own cat litter is ideal.
