Hello so im brand new to bonsai and i picked up a ficus from a gardening store. (Im thinking of buying a juniper from a bonsai person that has taken good care of it.) And i just made a soil mix with "hasselforsblomjord med leca" a swedish soil that has leca etc in it. Apperently really good for bonsai. But my question is should i repott the ficus i just got? Dosent have tje best soil in it from the store. I did wire it and proun it a little already. And should i add gravel to my soil mix? Feel free to google the soil i mention earlier. It's in swedish but if u want you can translate the page with google chrome.
Thanks!

If the tree is healthy there is no reason to repot it now.

When it needs it.

Too many trees are killed by people wanting to do too many things too soon.

The tree does look healthy. However, all the trees are healthy when stores sell them. It looks like it is planted in a normal plant soil and that cannot be good for a bonsai. I would repot it in an appropriate substrate for bonsai. The best time to do this is usually in early spring, but you should look for specific information about your tree. It might not survive an year in that soil.

Despite what many Think normal soil is not bad for bonsai. However, if you water your trees every day like Most bonsai People do, the tree needs a lot more grit.

The Main factors in care of bonsai is species, climate, soil, fertilizer and water. As long as the other factors support it, you can use almost any soil.

Grit is useless because it doesn`t absorb water or nutrients. Instead, you can use anything that is in a granular shape. I use perlite mixed with baked loam and put a layer of sphagnum moss on the surface. It works great. The water runs out of the pot immediately and the moss keeps the substrate moist.

My bad. Should be inorganic material, not grit.

Anyway, in the end it depends on local climate if a substrate work or not.

Hasselfors works great in Sweden IF you can protect the tree from early spring and late autumn strong showers. I am in the north West coast. If you are anywhere Else, try to get advice from People that grows bonsai locally. Sweden is a long Country with a lot of different growing zones.

Edit: ficus indoors it is.......your biggest challenge is enough light during winter, not soil.

I beg to suggest that grit can be used to make the soil drainable and many (not me, but even some Japanese professional growers) advocate its use as a bottom layer.
As we have a high organic soil naturally here in the tropics and no Akadama at all, grit is largely used to aerate soil mixes.
Just to make this topic more interesting.
