Yes, I do use ...some... potting soil.
I "dust" it on roots with any new pot, repot, or slip pot.
.My thinking is that it gives the roots .....SOME....idea that there's something more to be found once they start looking around in the main soil.
I...amend... my potting soil with a good dollop of pumice in it. This keeps it from packing up and clogging.
The potting soil I use has some fir bark and worm castings in it but I still don't trust it completly not to tend to pack.
Of course, deciduous likes more of it than conifers.

Just be sure to have spaces between particles. I've had akadama go VERY bad.
As I put levels of soil in, I also dust those levels with some of my potting mix.
