Hello

I need some advice about repotting my white pine. I've searched the forum and found some really good advice but still need a little help.
I'd like to grow the trunk some more but am unsure about which soil to repot the pine in.

I have ordered some bonsai soil from a local supplier. Here is what I bought:

This is our ready-to-use Bonsai standard soil.
Simply unpack and use for planting or repotting!

It contains a mixture of Akadama, a high quality hard clay mixture from Japan, pumice granulate (high porosity level, contains many air cells and avoids waterlogging) and Sphagnum-Turfmoos (which contains all the primary and secondary nutrients, as well as additional micronutrients fertilizers in small concentration).
This soil stores water and nutrients while avoiding root damages (root rot) thanks to its permeability, and guarantees a strong and healthy growth of plants. It is ideally suited for all indoor and outdoors plants (except for azaleas, which require "Kanuma" ).
pH-value: 6,3 to 6,9
Composition:
33 % Akadama (approximately 2 mm granularity)
21 % Lava - granulate
46 % Floraton

Should I use this soil to repot my tree for trunk growth or use some garden centre soil with it?

The pine is a nursery bought pine. I have followed the advice on the forum about pruning the candles and also at
cornwall-bonsai-society.co.uk/white-pine.html

I have included some photos showing what I did. I hope it turns out OK.

I will experience some heavy rain in Germany really soon and don't want the tree to suffer in wet conditions.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like the tree is in perfectly fine condition. Why the rush to repot? The tree can grow for a year or more in this pot without problems.

Hi leatherback. Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it.

The tree is still in the original pot. I bought the tree 2 weeks ago from my local garden centre. I don't know how long it has been in the pot and was assuming that the roots would be too compact to leave it for another year. I know trees and plants from garden centres tend to be root bound.
Given this, what would you suggest?

BTW there seems to be some kind of root 'thing' next to the trunk. I'm sorry I don't know how to describe it properly. Do you know what that is?

Do you mean the net? Sometimes rootballs are wrapped in a "net" for easier, faster transport. When arrived at the nursery they are potted in a container, sometimes net and all. Depending on how long ago that was you are going to have a "fun" time getting it out from between the roots...

Hi Leatherback

I understand what you're saying but 'theoretically', let's just say I did decide to repot. Would the size of the pot in the photo be big enough to grow the tree some more? I'm not sure if the type of pot is correct too.

Being in lockdown makes me a little impatient, but I know this is the wrong thing to feel with bonsai.

I am not great with pines.
The pot is however very large. You could fit the whole original pot in there!

Thanks. OK, now I am a little confused. I thought I needed a bigger pot to grow the truck some more.

If I put this tree in a smaller pot than shown, will the truck still thicken?

Pines do not need a lot of space as long as they get fertilizer water and sun. This sylvestris I found in a garbage pile of a local grower. It was overgrown (I chopped about 1 metre off the top before transport home. Not the size of the tree compared to the pot size, after I trimmed it back for transport.
