So I should leave it in it's nursery plastic for a year?

My bad. You did mention species. Sorry.

Yes, you should leave it in that pot for a year. If survived I would put in a much bigger pot for a few years. Then maybe repeat. That tree is not ready to go into a bonsai pot.
