Hello Everyone,

*photos are all out of order, you can figure it out*

I repotted a Acer Palmatum the other week and took pictures to show y’all! I’ve had this guy a few years, from nursery stock, probably on sale for $20 or something. It’s grafted.

Last reported in probably spring 2020? Maybe 2021? Not last year.

1) before

2&3) Root mess. I had a colander in there, but I remembered it being upside down! Oh well:

4, 5) Starting to trim the roots:

6)
Far from fitting!

7)
More severe cutbacks.

8, 9)
Making sure the front/back are aligned. Pot is a cheap plastic pot, fine for now.

10-11)
Fill it up! A lot of DE, some lava rocks and even some organic bark bits in there.

Final. Compare before and after, massive amount of root loss here.

All in all it went well, one of many I’ve been doing!
Pot was real deep but I knew it would take a couple step into its final pot - almost there this time! I gotta start shopping I guess.

Ome step closer!

Just some thoughts going forward. Maples is best repotted right before bud break. I would not repot a maple in this stage. Now aftercare is very important. Put it in full shade and be very focused on watering until mid summer.

On next repotting I would bareroote and work on the nebari. That lump on one side and crossing roots will just get worse by time. The earlier this work is done the better is the end result.

Nice to see you getting started with bonsai.
As indicated before, a little earlier is probably better for extensive rootwork (Or in late summer when the tree is over the peak growth).
Anyway. You could go a lot further with working the roots. By doing it a bit more assertively, you will create a better rootball.
