Hello, i was wondering whether akadama or any other similar dried or fired clay weakens/breaks down after storage in a cool dry room after say a year or so.

Akadama is dried, not fired. It does not break down when it's stored dry.
Danish fired clay (the stuff I and LB use) does not break down when stored warm or cold, wet or dry (at least, not quickly. I have a container outside, with the lid off, filled with this clay and rain water. Has been outside for a few months now, and the clay is still the same).

Impressive stuff there, now i hear of it, would ou be kind as to tell me what company this danish clay is from or what kind of clay it is?

It's sold under another name in your country - I'm not sure where you can buy it though.

It's the non-clumping clay version.

Forget the kitty litter if you live in the US. Look for Turface MVP, it is usually sold at John Deere Landscaping stores here.

Hey John,

I have seen turface mentioned a couple of times, but never actually seen it. What sort of stuff is it? Bob is in London area, UK.

Bob: You have mentioned in one of your posts the same stuff that Auk and I use in our mixes, through a link on cat litter on bonsai4me.

I have moved away from using it as only component in the mixture as I find the topsoil stays moist too long, and I get algea (Through my rainwater drums that are not fully light-proof). I am now mixing it in with dry levelling gravel, effectively this is expanded backed clay, crushed to 1-3-5mm particles.

Thanks leatherback. I'll try the mixture. I've read hat turface is basically cruched terracotta. But ive also heard its not so great.
