Hi,

I am looking to start cultivating some Bonsai. I am sure these were purchased from a Bonsai centre some time ago but I have long since forgotten their particular application.

Please can any one help identify these 2 stone variants, and their common uses:

Looks like stones to me. ;)
But in all seriousness.. They have a pretty uniform size and are roughly of the same mineral/quartz composition.. the second variety having a coarser surface which could hold on to a bit of water..
Common uses is bonsai "soil". You take either or mix them at will, add 20%(for shohin or larger) or 40%(for mame) organic substrate(kokos or bark) and you have your bonsai soil.
Dunno where you are but here in Germany that's a pretty wide spread cultivation method. That way you can not overwater the trees anymore. You do have to make sure to fertilize every week in the growing season tho as that little ammount of organic matter doesn't hold on to the minerals for long.

Having all trees in the same (well draining) mix you don't need to carefully water and worry. You can just water all your trees the same and with a hose :cheer:
