Hi. I've been having problem with watering(new to bonsai).
So I've reported my 3 trees using indoor soil mix.
I only report spammers.
To make it easier for me I've found on YouTube videos to put layer fine akadama on top of it as a watering gadge(colour change when is wet)
Is that really a thing? I've never heard of it (which doesn't mean much - I may simply not know about it).
However, it makes no sense to me. Imagine having a soil that has gotten hydrophobic. When you water, the acadama will be wet, the soil will not take up any water, so the akadama does not tell you anything. Likewise, imagine a soil that holds lots of water. The akadama will get wet, from the bottom up, but the top layer may dry when it's warm, while the soil is still wet. So, in both cases, it wouldn't work. At least, that's what I would expect.
I wouldn't trust this method.
