Back in April I dug several trees up from random flower beds. I put one tree in a nursery container and watered it nicely. It did not take to it, and three days later the leaves were brown and crinkly. I watered it faithfully anyway thinking it might come back. By July I was having doubts, and by August it was obviously dead.

So, I moved it over away from the live trees and continued to water them, and not this one. This morning, watering the others, I looked down at the tree dead since April, and what did I see? Leaves.

It goes to show you never can tell.

Happy to see you having success collecting your yardadaris lol,

But you can tell :)
If you look at the bark you can tell whether it has dried out or is still sappy.

I didn't note that this was after July and August with very little rain, temperatures over 100 F/38C, and it should have died after a week.

I never looked at the bark, and I guess I should have. I have about a dozen dug up now and losing that skinny trunk didn't bother me a lot. Now I have to treat the tough guy like a survivor and find something wonderful in that skinny trunk.

Just put it back in the ground and treat it as a champ. Singing "your a survivor" mentime. After a few years when digging it up again sing "eye of the tiger"
