I was looking for a fertilizer that is high in phosphorous and potassium as the guide suggests.
I found two at my nearby nursery which fits this
One being 16 - 21- 27
The other being 10 - 25 - 20
which is better

At what point in the weather do you switch from nitrogen to not nitrogen?

This is September and the temperatures have dropped a little, with cool nights, and second growth has started in a lot of the trees. It will probably continue until mid October, then start hardening and leaves will change and drop in early to mid November. Some places call mid September autumn, but there will be at least a month of short sleeves.

One elm down by the creek turned yellow in December. It is now in a nursery can on the back porch and is putting out lots of new branches now.

Yes, they go dormant in high summer.

Second growth?

I just got the answer to that question at the meeting tonight.

When the weather gets real hot - which means mostly August and low-highs of 90-105F/35-42C or so, the plant gives up and shuts down photosynthesis. Then, when it cools off to 80-85F (yes, cool) the plant starts back up. So, they said, nitrogen fertilizer for while now, till mid October or so, then cut back slowly. If you are using organic types that have to break down, it will take a month or so, so switch to very low nitrogen now.

This explains why the crepe myrtles did fine in August with one watering a day and now are wilted in the morning.
