do you keep it inside or out? Trees die inside!
Soil looks wet ( but you could have wateren it just before taking the picture)
Why is it standing on top of these pebbles?

It's outside. Soil is slightly moist but I'm guessing dry. Stones is to allow for humidity tray. I was trying NOT to over-water and just spraying the soil every few days but maybe it needs a periodic deep watering? It's the brown needles that's concerning me. Thanks.

It needs to be watered thoroughly: take a garden hose or a water can and water till it spills from the drainage hole. Next watering not on a schedule but when soil feels dry to the touch.
Needles already look very dry so it could be too late already.
The humidity tray does nothing, you can throw it away.

What's a ROUGH rule of thumb - deep watering every how many days?

There isn't a rule by day. Obviously, if it rains two inches/five centimeters every day you don't need to water. If it doesn't rain for a week you probably need to.

If the plants are looking a little wilted you should have watered earlier. If the soil looks and feels dry, you should water.

spraying the soil with water is a bad idea. Just water when the surface starts to get dry. You have a lot of organics in there, so you have a little harder substrate. For me, it means watering daily for most of the year. Only in fall/winter I water less. In hot summer wehather I water twice a day

Besides watering I think you should take the dry foliage out.
