Hello everyone!

So, I started off my bonsai a little bit enthusiastically. I purchased several cuttings of species I wanted to work with (mostly willows and gardenia) and I did end up with a few more than I expected! All to the good!

However, my question is more generic, hopefully. I know each tree likes different fertilizers, or likes a different schedule. But what I want to know is when should I use a fertilizer for the first time?

My cuttings (for the most part) have sprouted enthusiastically and are now growing their first leaves and branches. It's delightful to watch changes day-by-day! I'm just not sure when the first time I should add my fertilizer to the water?

Also, if anyone knows a trick to get reluctant plants to start growing their roots, that would be helpful too!

the growing season of a Bonsai tree is from the early spring through late summer, and this the ideal period to fertilize it weekly

Thank you for that! My concern at the moment is more that its not spring or summer at the moment, but I'm starting off some cuttings. I got them late in the year, so I'll be starting them indoors and then acclimating them to the outdoors in the spring when they're bigger and more grown/stable.

I wasn't sure if I should be adding fertilizer over the winter (indoors) while they're starting off, and if so, how long should I wait before starting?

Fertilize during the growth season only. And only if the tree is in good condition and is happily growing.

All plants indoors get fertilizer every 4-6 weeks in winter, at my place.

I missed your response! Thanks so much! All of my cuttings are growing vigorously (despite the depredations of one of my cats on the gardenias)!
