There is no need to protect at all. Mine have been out in -10C of frost with no problem. It is not a good idea to put them in any room, a greenhouse would be ok though. Most of the Chinese Elms that come into this country are from Holland, so similar climate.
Ok fair enough but my garden barely gets any sun so currently it’s in my room where it gets sunlight daily and isn’t near any radiators or air conditioners, surely that will be fine?

No it will not. As I already said in my previous post, inside it will die. 99% of the “help my tree is dying”questions here are from people with trees that are inside. All the years that I have been here and answering the same questions I have not seen one person come back to show how good their tree is doing inside. There is not one tree in the entire world that lives naturally indoors.
That is bad advice. Been there worn the t shirt and killed the trees, and I know what I am doing. Greenhouse yes house no. There is no need to protect them, we do not get cold enough to protect them. The lack of light and humidity and heat of a house is a killer.
Yes: in uk the best place to keep the tree is outside.
No: i would not put it straight from living room conditions to outside in the middle of the winter. Trees need gradual changes going into winter conditions.
The best thing you can do now is to put it in a cold but frost free space with good light. Anywhere between 5-15 degrees would do. When your outdoors conditions is well above freezing it is time to put it outside for the rest of its life.
