Overwatering? was created by MichielZ

Hi all,

Im pretty new to Bonsai and Im trying to get serious with it. Now I have several Metasequoia trees, a Larix decidua, Ficus carica and an Acer Palmatum wood.

Now, they're all outdoors, exposed to the sun and protected from heavy wind. I live in The Netherlands and so my question is the following.
During this wet Autumn season, the ground stays pretty wet. If the drainage of the pots is oke, will my trees be fine?
Im asking because it might as well rain for weeks. What Im asking is: Is there a moment thinkable where outdoor trees should be protected from more rain?

Thanks!

Michiel

It is very difficult to overwater if the soil is free draining. If the pots are really saturated you can put a small piece of wood or stone under one end of the pot just to lift it, but it should not be needed much. Alternatively, put them under a bench to keep the rain off. I do not do anything to mine there is no need, yes they get wet but it is no problem.

What soil do you have in the pots? If it is normal potting soil, yes it can get too wet.

Did you know this website has a Dutch version? www.bonsaiempire.nl

Rain does nothing to outdoor trees even if it's for weeks. The only thing you need to take care of is that no water should stand around the tree, it should flow.

If you find that water is staying on the surface you can put something under one end if the pot to lift it a bit, I never have to with mine, having said that I have not watered since mid October.
