That is a good question. I always water as early as possible in the morning. I was advised that by a Japanese artist that I had workshops with. In the summer I would also be watering later if needed. At this time of the year and later in the winter as early as possible means that the trees have time to dry out a bit before nightfall.
Most of the winter I do not water anyway as they do not dry out depending on the rainfall of course.

I prefer to water as early in the day as possible, at least before the hottest part of the day so that the trees will have water there when the sun is demanding they transpire.

In our area we have a lot of bugs, particularly cockroaches, that love water. During the dry parts of the year watering close to dark will attract them close to the house, which I really don't want.
