Hi Patti,

The Bonsai Empire's website has a lot of useful information. Here are a few links:
www.bonsaiempire.com/care/watering
www.bonsaiempire.com/care/fertilizing
www.bonsaiempire.com/advanced/yamadori-shohin
www.bonsaiempire.com/related-arts/shohin

These are all listed in the Main Menu which is located in the dark gray box in the upper left hand side of this page...just above your name and profile picture or in the gray bar at the very top of the page located under the Bonsai Empire logo. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks leslie for putting these links here.

Shohin is bonsai so the care is about the same. It's just another name for bonsais that are between 15 and 25cm. They are in smaller pots too so in general shohins need to be watered often.

They need to be fertilized the same as normal bonsai.

Good luck! :)

Thank you, Youri...

Does our website have a progression or tutorial on how to create shohin? That would be awesome! :cheer:

Hi Leslie,

We have articles about shohin.
www.bonsaiempire.com/related-arts/shohin
www.bonsaiempire.com/advanced/yamadori-shohin

Here is an article about pots used for shohin (and mame, these are smaller than 15cm).
www.bonsaiempire.com/advanced/shohin-pots

Here is an article about Koju-en, a shohin nursery in Japan.
www.bonsaiempire.com/bonsai-japan/koju-en

We have also many progressions articles, and I've searched through which trees are actually shohin (so between 15 and 25cm).

These trees in the progression articles are shohin sized bonsai:
www.bonsaiempire.com/progressions/hawthorn-yamadori
www.bonsaiempire.com/progressions/elm-training

Here is a tree that is 28cm so it isn't a shohin anymore, but it is also a very good article!
www.bonsaiempire.com/advanced/cotoneaster-styling

Also here is a very good video of making a shohin. I recommend the videos of GrahamWPotter, they are very good!

If you also want to see more videos about bonsai, you can search GrahamWPotter or Bjorvalabonsai on youtube or you can watch the videos on bonsaifarm.tv/ from Lindsay Farr, all those videos are great!

Hope this is enough information, I think so :)

Awesome! Very rewarding to see all the information and more.
I haven't been to any bonsai web sites for 10 years. The direction you have given me has got to be the best. thank you. Not just for the shohin but for the live demos on technique and air layering. wonderful, I'm pretty far away from most bonsai nurseries and this is given me a lesson on demand.
