Anything that gets the water evenly on to the soil, I use a small watering can with a fine rose, I also use a drinks bottle for feeding my indoor trees with diluted liquid fertilizer

Using a can with a rose is the best way. Using a bottle is liable to wash soil from the pot. I always use either a can with rose or a hose with a rose. Never ever without the rose.
