The juniper genus is made up of about 50 to 70 different species within the cypress family. They are evergreen coniferous trees or shrubs, which are very popular for Bonsai. Junipers can have two types of foliage, needle-like, and scale-like foliage.

(#3) An 800 year-old Bonsai tree at Shunkaen, by Kunio Kobayashi

Juniper Bonsai in Japan

A remarkable Juniperus which is well known for its extremely high age; the tree is reported to be over 800 years old! Its owner, master Kobayashi, is one of the most well known Bonsai artists in the world and has won the prestigious Prime Minister award in Japan four times. His nursery, ShunkaEn, is located in Tokyo and is open to visitors.

(#4) Goshin "protector of the spirits", by John Naka

Goshin Bonsai, Juniper

Goshin ("protector of the spirit") is a Bonsai created by John Naka. It is a forest planting of eleven Foemina Junipers, the earliest of which Naka began training into Bonsai in 1948. Naka donated it to the National Bonsai Foundation in 1984, to be displayed at the United States National Arboretum; it has been there ever since.
