chinese elm fall dormancy etc was created by tubaboy

I have a couple of questions regarding this chinese elm.

It was originally kept inside all the time. I put it outside this summer wanting to make it into an "outdoor" plant. It grew very well.. and not It is fall here. Germany's winters are not really cold where I am. my question is: is this pretty normal fall behavior for a chinese elm, and if I protect it from frost and freezing temps should it be ok? It has some yellowing leaves, but also new growth.

my second is what are general opinions of the tree?

Actually now would be a good time.

Seems there's a nice tree in there.

any thoughts on the fall? should it be ok keeping it outside? I'm not far from the southern German/dutch border.

If it was mine, I'd keep it outside. If it gets really cold I might reconsider (though I wouldn't really know where to put it, indoors is no option for me)

I have some shelves built with bubble wrap that lets in some light. It kept the temperature at about 9 degrees when it went down below freezing two weeks ago. I have my other field elm and hornbeam in their, as the have already lost their leaves.

It is also on a balcony that, while it may not get as much light this time of years, is pretty well protected from wind, and also stays pretty warm.

Chinese Elm will withstand -12C which mine have, and it does not lose any leaves until spring when the new buds start to move. That was the bigger one, the two smaller ones do sometimes lose leaves but I do not protect at all.

should I be concerned then about the few yellowing leaves and some of them that have fallen off? it isn't a lot, but you can see them in the pictures.

It looks like the yellowing takes place at thetips, rather than at the base of the branch. I do find that worrying. To me that is a sign showing potential root trouble. However, as discussed.. It IS fall, and as such it is nrmal for the tree to drop -part of- the leaves.

My chinese elm cutting is still outside.
