Hello everyone. My name is James and I am new to Bonsai Empire. I have been into bonsai casually for about 2 years now. I dont know much, but I am trying to learn
I have 2 trees. A Juniper which I have had for about 2 years (my first tree), and a Chinese Sweet Plum that I got about 2 weeks ago! The pot that the plum tree came in was hideous, so i transplanted it into an understated tokoname pot
I keep the juniper outdoors in full sun. Im growing the sweet plum in my bedroom. I have it in a north facing window with 2 desk lamps on it. I put 26W CFL bulbs (1625 Lumens each) in the 2 lamps. It seems extremely bright to me, but hopefully it will be sufficient for the tree to survive. I also planted Kyoto moss spores around the base of the tree. Its been about a week since I planted them, and I have a dozen little sprouts so far. I will post more pics once the moss develops a bit (If it even does :pinch: ).
I attached a few pictures of my trees. Im a newbie, so dont be too critical on my pruning and styling
.
I hope to learn a lot from you guys during my time here! Thanks for having me.

Hi there,
Welcome to the forum.
It looks like you're doing fine with the juniper.
The moss spores in the pot may not be a good idea. Most moss needs damp soil to survive where trees need to dry out a little between watering. Moss will also hold in moisture, leading to trouble like root rot.
I have no idea about the sweet plumb.
Good luck.
Lance

howdy n welcome james... your not the "Top Gear" James May are you?
anyway your juni looks like it is doing well the design may be enhanced with some branch wireing.very good start
as for the sweet plum the more light you give it the smaller the leaves will need to be to support the tree. seeing there are new leaves and they are not huge i think your lighting will work fine

thanks for the warm welcome!
I am a huge top gear fan, but sadly im not THAT James May.. hehe.
My plan for the sweet plum was to have just a little moss around the base of the tree. Once it grows too much I will remove some. I heard that moss can be bad thing, but I personally think it looks to beautiful not to have

Haha, I'm also a fan of Top Gear!
Great trees James and welcome to the forum! I like the tokoname pot of the second tree (plum), though it's a bit too big in my opinion, but for a 'training' pot it is alright, now it has more than enough space to develop further!

yeah.. I thought that having a fairly larger pot would give the tree room to develop a bit.. It was my favorite pot at the bonsai shop I go to, so I didnt really care that it was a little large.. hehe.

Don't worry about that, I put a juniper of mine also in a far too big pot, but now it has enough room to grow and develop. When it has developed some more, I will put it in a smaller pot.
It is a very nice pot indeed!
