It was suggested I buy a Maple from a garden center and turn it into a mame like the one in the pic. I think I may do this.

Got this Acer Palmatum. What do you all think of it? How much thicker does this need to get?

About 10 times as thick at leaast.

I think this will be grafted on rootstock. Did you check the nebari & transition into the trunk?

To be honest.. I would for A Palmatum start with a regular "wild" variety. They are much stronger, can take a lot of abuse and grow very fast. Ideal to get a feeling for the species.
