Hey everyone, I’m new to bonsai and could really use some advice. I’ve had my juniper bonsai for about 3 months, and up until recently it looked great. Lately, though, some of the foliage has started turning brown and crispy. Here’s what I’ve been doing:
  • It’s an outdoor bonsai (I keep it on my balcony, gets morning sun until about noon).
  • I water once a day when the top of the soil feels dry.
  • I used a general-purpose potting soil (maybe too dense?).
  • I haven’t repotted it yet or used fertilizer.
It’s been pretty windy here lately, so I’m wondering if that could be drying it out, or maybe I’m actually overwatering? The browning seems to be spreading from the inside of the foliage outwards.Any ideas on what might be causing this and how I can save it? I’d hate to lose my first bonsai

Can't say without picture, at least you do not have it inside as that would kill it. Check the soil to see if it is dry when you water, depending on where you are in the world you could be watering too much. Every day at this time if year in the northern hemisphere is probably too much. If you can post a picture it would help. Do not re pot and do not fertilise.

At the moment I have not watered my junipers for 5 or 6 weeks. This time of the year it is getting colder and it is raining quite a lot here. But my climate may be colder or wetter than yours?

Anyway, watering every day on junipers in potting soil this time of the year is to much no matter where you are in the nortern hemisphere. If you are in the southern hemisphere it the oposite. Then now it is time to increase watering.

How long ago did you repot? Why did you shose potting soil?
