Morning from sunny England! I've been growing a few plants over the past few seasons and here is my Azalea Japonica.
What's the beat way to prune it?

I´d say that beat way would be to prune it while listening to bebop and reciting some zen poem by Gary Snyder.
Only a guess though... :)

Morning!
It seems to be flowering?
I have one like yours, but I don't prune it while the flowers are up...
Am I being too conservative, maybe?

I'd agree! I'm not pruning it until after it flowers!
Thanks for your interest.

Again we recalling about a period of trunk thickening by potting it in the ground and pruning any branches that overlap. I had one which had both issues. It was not in the ground and the branches overlapped. Also the flowers were too big.

Azaleas are usually re potted after flowering. Don't allow the flowers to stay oe for more than about two weeks, remove flowers and the pods underneath. Re pot and once the plant is growing agin it is time to prune. Pruning can be quite hard. The soil to use is Kanuma.
The plant looks ok, a bit straggly, but otherwise ok.

Hi enasio, absolutely right. Flowers take a lot of energy, better used to develop the plant. When debveloping azalea, one normally remove the flowerbuds.
