Cat litter

Hi has any one used pets at home basic clay cat litter as bonsai soil or as a additive to soils

Yes, I have used it in the past and many still use.

Not the kind you mention but I still use cat litter for my trees in development.
You should check if the cat litter is made from a baked natural clay.

I also have found an Argentinian lava soil from Patagonia that is sold in Brazil as cat litter. People say wonders about it... Testing it on some cuttings:

I'm SORRY!
It seems the link above points to a page that has been updated because the TESCO Cat Litter on the original article is now discontinued in the UK.
But the brand I have been using in Brazil with success is Tidy Cats by Purina (Nestlé).
Basically it is DE ( Diatomaceous Earth ) - And it works very well in a mix.
Some people use it as is for young plants and cuttings.

Sanicat pink is one to use in the UK if you are going Down the cat litter route.

I started using Sanicat Pink last year and the trees that I re-potted seem to be doing well.

I used this mix.

4 Parts Sanicat Pink
2 Parts Grit
1 Part John Innes No. 3
1 Part Bark

If anyone can recommend a good mix using Sanicat I would love to hear about it. I have read somewhere (possibly on Harry Harrington site before he closed the the link bonsai4me.com/Basics/Basicscatlitter.htm ) that all you need is Sanicat Pink and 10% bark.

It all comes down to your climate and care regime. For soil there are no solution that fits all.
