Newbie question about repotting

Hi all,

When repotting a tree from a garden pot to a bonsai pot, is it necessary to go through the intermediate step of repotting to a plastic bonsai pot?  I would think not, but just want check.

You can put it any pot you lie, but as it is only in development why use a good pot?
