Thanks for the sound advice guys.
I didn't want to disturb the roots anymore than I should that's why I wanted to pot it in something bigger. But will definitely take on your advice.
I shall leave just a few stumps then and check back hopefully tommorrow with progress.
Is firethorn OK with being cut back dramatically too Lb?

I have never collected a firethorn myself. I am growing out some very youngsters and they seem to handle everything well, except for drying out after rootwork (One of mine is struggling as I did not water them last week)

I decided to leave the firethorn until tommorrow as I started cutting it down and decided it may be too late as I had my daughter with me and she wasn't helping much just bugging me to go home so digging that is for tommorrow. Hopefully you can make out the structure that is left.
Again I have left some trunks too long but only because there was life growing below and I can cut back later to form one thick trunk hopefully?

Leaving the trunks long is really good. There is always the potential for die back. If you had cut it right where you wanted it, you might lose a portion and affect your future shape. Let them grow out this year and cut where you want later. Nice job, and good luck!

From what you show, I am not convinced it is a hawthorn. I would say firethorn.
