Japanese Black Pine care after shipping during Oct was created by Pinenut89

Hello, I am pretty new to bonsai but very much enjoy it. I am just getting into pines. My question is regarding a young pine I just received in the mail. It was shipped partial bare root, wrapped with some soil and wet newspaper surrounding the roots. It was in transit for 2 days. The tree looks healthy and very green, although I know pines take time to show stress. My question is, with it being mid October, I know it isn't the right time to really be repotting and wiring but I have to pot it. What should and shouldn't I be doing to increase my chance of success? Thanks for your advice. (I live in Ohio, Zone 6)

What you should do:
I can't tell as I don't know what you have. A sapling? Seedling? Young tree?

What you should not do:
1. Order young trees and have them shipped by mail
2. Order trees without thinking what to do with 'm first
3. Already think about wiring. The tree must be settled and healthy first.

The tree is about 12" tall. Probably a of couple years old. Again, new to this, not sure what the technical terms are. Also, there are no local bonsai nurseries near me so seems like my only option is mail unless I want to drive for hours. Also, I will obviously put it in a pot. Beyond that, I'm not sure what else I should have planned for 'm yet besides to grow it until it gets stronger. I was more asking about placement and proper care after being potted as I have to pot it at this time of year. Couldn't find any forums on my specific needs so I decided to ask the experts myself. I have a decent understanding of the general care requirements otherwise.

Looks potted to me. Do you want to repot it by any chance?

Make sure the pot has a drainage hole. Leave it alone for a year. Don't repot, wire or prune.
Take that year to learn how to train black pines.

Looking at the needles I don't think it actually does look very healthy. They seem a bit 'flat' and wrinkly.
Let's compare. This is one of my black pine seedlings.

Hm. Not a great photo. I guess you can see the difference though.

I just potted it myself. Should I just be treating it as a normal repot or are there any special requirements I should be following given the time of year I had to repot it?

Tip 4: ask about special requirements before repotting...

Leave it alone now. Of course it must be kept outside.
