With closer look, that tree need more time than I expected. I like more the younger half of the slingshot and think it have a bit more potential.
I’ll do the layering tomorrow, and the hard pruning in fall/winter.

The blue lines what I think to left on the tree for that year, and the red lines for the air layering. It looks like the fine branch on the top (blue) what I’d like to make the leader maybe died back. I don’t like the opposite side for top, so I cross my fingers that the tree starts to sprouting out in that part also when I’ve finished with the layer. From down the second set of branches are opposed to each other. I didn’t decided which one need to go, but hopefully on the fall I’ll have more luck with the structural part.

Hi - though I am still a newbie, I can tell your plans look very promising, both the airlayering on the oldest branch of the slingshot and the styling on the youngest one, which has definitely a better taper.
I have got one small Acer that I'm training (shown in my profile) plus two "normal" Acers (garden plants on my balcony, not trained as bonsai) and I can assure you they are so vigorous that, once pruned, new shoots appear shortly, and which can be further trained into proper secondary branches.

Thank you Ricky :) I like your tree. I hope in my climate, I’ll have the same chance than you.

Thanks Felidae, I am sure yours will do fine.
I see you live in Switzerland, much cooler than Milano, with its horrible hot and humid summers... up to more than 40 degrees C last year... hard times for maples!!

Got that Shishigashira today. Air layered already, but if it won’t be enough for the autumn, I’ll let in for the next spring.

Hey,
I have problem with the shirasawanum. The other JMs budding and thriving, but this don’t want to give a single sprout. I left it in the nursery soil, hence it was late for that tree to repot and now I thinking that causes the lack of vigour. The soil could be few years old, pretty compact and not easy for the water to penetrate. Can I safely do something (like loosen the soil a bit and slip pot) , or just try to don’t care and do the job in the next spring?

Slip potting should be safe. Especially when you think the problem is the soil

Thanks! I’m not 100% sure, but I highly suspect the soil. Need some pics?

Too much dead roots. And holy ..., look at this! The poor thing almost fits in a bonsai pot!

I have in the past repotted without too much (and with too much) root pruning, repotted maples in mid summer. Aftercare (Some shade, do not let dry out) is important, but then it could be done.

I would guess that watering with lukewarm water & adding a bit of fertilizer could also help. But some just do not grow like the wild JM.
