I'm moving to a house with a garden, finally, and am picking up a couple of new trees in the process. I've gotten one of them, a birch, and I wanted to get a needle leaf tree, either a juniper, pine, or hinoki cypress. My track record with Pines has not been good. I think this area of Europe is not really good for pines. (too damp) I have managed to keep one pine alive, and posisbly a second. Anyone have any thoughts? My trouble with pines could also have been caused by my balcony, i.e. not enough direct sunlight.

Junipers are strong plants. If you have a understanding of the bonsai basic, they take a lot of abuse.

Pine grow well in Europe, Scots Pine are bullet proof providing the care is right which applies to any species including Juniper. What some pines do not like is being too wet, particularly Japanese White and Black Pines.

If there is one species with a totally different approach in bonsai, it's a Pine.
In my opinion. I would not call them bullit proof.

Taxus can be a good option. Evergreen, easy to backbud, tolerate partial shade.

And cheers with your new house.

I have a couple of yews... as far as general care, they are the easiest trees I have.

I am really looking forward to it.. I mean the house, and I'm sure next spring, I'll see it in my trees.

I'm thinking juniper or cypress of some kind, depending on what I find or I may wait until spring... although, I have found that moving trees in fall/winter seems to have less adverse effects than in the summer.

So here's an update. I ended up getting a larch from Bonsai Zentrum Münsterland as my conifer. I debated between this guy, and a slightly more expensive, but larger and less filled out white pine. But in the end, this guy won.
