Hi all, I am a new member to this forum. I am new to the art of bonsai. My daughter had a college project for I.B. a 365 photo time lapse. I suggested growing an acorn. After about a month she kindly left the job to me.... After 6 months (it was about 4inchs high) our local squirrel ate it. As it was early spring we could not get another acorn. I bought 50 seeds from California (Sequoiadendron giganteum, Redwood). It was advised these were difficult to grow and were on the endangered list roughly 80,000 left.We stratified the seeds for two months and had success with germination. Repotted seedlings after a month into small individual pots, and repotted again after six months. We now have 24, 8 inch mini trees which are 14 months old. I am very interested in trying to cultivate a specimen into a bonsai. I have read redwood are brittle and not a good tree to use but have a desire to try. Also finding homes for the most massive tree on earth that can grow over 300 feet and has a girth of 55 feet, that can live for 3,000 years is not easy.Reading the net advice was to leave in standard pot for three years before pruning/wiring. Any advice would be apreciated.Thank you.

You might also consider inoculating the saplings with Mycorrhiza to help them grow.

It is not going to grow to 300ft, or live for that long in a pot. The tree will grow to the size of container it is in, it is possible to keep it small if that is what you want. At the moment it needs to row a lot as it has a spindly trunk and branches. The best and quickest way would be in the round for 5 years or more, then dug up and potted.
