(About Ficus Benjamina):
That's because it is a tropical plant that comes from a rain forest and does not need a lot of light. And it is nothing to do with bonsai.

You're joking, right ?

Everyone will laugh until they try it for themselves using lights bright enough. Windows with full sun arent enough.

There isn't a lot of info about this, as bonsai is quite traditional and people arent willing to try nea things.

I'm not laughing. It's not that I'm traditional, but I just don't have the room or the money. And I don't have the need - my trees grow well outside, where they belong. It's not only the light, but also temperature and humidity and some other factors.

i agree with auk, trees are grown in natural light in there natural habitat, so it is more than fine to grow them in normal, natural light. the other main factor for my trees is humidity, that plays a massive part for half of my indoor bonsai.

Stripe, you said that window light is not good enough, but at my school, there is a ficus benjamina variegated form and it has survived 10 meters away from a window for 5 good years. not all bonsai can survive without window light, let alone window light.

Survive and thrive are two different things. I had a ficus by a window once, but then built a grow box with 800W cfl lighting. It grew a foot taller pretty quick over a few months, pruned it back, and now its time for the fourth cut back.

I also have had a juniper thrive under the same light for over a year and a half now. Junipers are strictly outdoor trees for everyone else..

No I am not joking. And there is no such thing as indoor bonsai. There are species that are tender and need protection but that does not make them indoor bonsai.

Well.. you wrote:

This looks like you're saying there's no such thing as a bonsai from tropical plants. That, of course, is not true.
