Funny, when I started bonsai in my first year, I also grew an avocado.
Then I started reading up. The leaves of avocado do not reduce much in sice (I got them to grow to less then 5 cm at one point) and the do not reliably grow side branches on the places you need them (So you will not get ramnification).

For a succesfull avocado bonsai, you are looking at trunks of about 25+ cm thick. To a VERY large (1 metre tall) bonsai. So yeah, it CAN be done. You will need to plant this in the garden, and let it grow untill it is about 15cm thick. Then cut it down to the first tryunk segment. Say, 30cm tall. Let it grow again, till the new grow reaches maybe 10cm thick. Cut back to 40 cm. Let it grow again till you have 5 cm leader. Cut back again to 45cm. Then start working on branches.

My guess is that you will need about 40 years to get to the point where you can start thinking about a container.

In summary: Not very suitable for bonsai.

IMHO Not very suitable for bonsai + person new at bonsai = not going to work out.

I will say that it can be done. Just google avocado bonsai and have a look. It may not look like a natural miniature tree, but why let that be a limitation? Just be creative and try things out.
Another forum have a thread about this and its very inspiring.
I have just started 5 avocado bonsai projects. The thing is that you have to start training it as soon the stem starts to develop and then proon it very often so you keep it at a low bushy state.

I've seen many.
None inspired me.

But you understand there is some people that think its beautifu and fun to do, right?

Of course bonsai is a natural looking miniature tree. But if its more like a fantasy bonsai thingy, what do you call it then? Is there a name for that in the bonsai world or should it just be called a ”miniature plant”?

There is alot of bonsais that dont look 100% like natural miniature trees(but is beautiful anyway), but its called bonsai anyway. Where do you draw the line?

Not everything that is fun to do with trimming plants is bonsai. Don' t try to make it.

If you cut the shoots after the first sing of leaf growth, you can manipulate the direction of the growth using bread twist ties. I found they work best because it allows you to guide the growth but the tree can still flex enough to not break( I tried different gauge wire and ended up breaking some growth shoots off. in the beginning stages of growth I cut the tree back as soon as it grew past the seed. This triggered another shoot to grow as well. To trigger more branches just remove a leaf once it have grown enough to not harm the branch. I’m new to bonsi but I like the avocado because it requires almost daily maintenance because it growth so fast. I will agree it can’t be classified as a true bonsi because it doesn’t resemble a full scale tree. The tree pictured is 6ish months old I stared the seed early July. As the trunk hardens I plan to remove the main wire(a repurposed clothes hanger)
