Roots are coming in nicely, but most of them are on one side. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the scarred area.

If you are layering below the scar: Yeah, there will not be a lot of sap flow below the scar. You may never get good roots on the scarred side.

Lesson for next time: Either (well) above the scare. Or let the scar close before layering..

But congratulations on getting roots. Many people have trouble there the first times.

Had a decent root structure so I separated it from the trunk. I also trimmed the branches a bit, going to let it recover until next growing season. Ignore the wires and string, I was playing around with different bending. It's not staying.

I like Felidae's idea of using the scar as the trunk of the tree and hollowing it out. If you do as she suggested and plant in a deep pot and bury it up to the scar and then carefully carve it out, you'll have a beautiful base.

It has potential, though probably not traditional bonsai potential. (What can I say, I too like deadwood)
