don't know about the leaves but the tree is a trident maple not a chinese maple

Looks like *rust* ~ a fungal infection. Here's some good info...scroll down to *Fungi/Mildew* and read that whole section including *Rust*

So yeah, Jon...don't be so hard on yourself. I didn't know what kind of Maple it is. We can know everything all at once y'know. Remember that this is a loooong learning journey that we are on so sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Oh...and don't panic about the fungal infection (if that's what it is). My variegated English Ivy had a few leaves with rusty-brown tips and I just kept trimming them off when they appeared. I haven't seen any for a few weeks now. Just keep trimming the infected leaves off so it doesn't spread and carefully lift it out of the pot to check to see if the roots look healthy...no need to do anything drastic like chopping all the roots off. Take a few deep breaths and let us know what you find, K?
