when you water, do you water over the whole tree itself? on hot sunny days if i water over the whole tree the water spots left behind on the leaves act as a magnifying glass and will leave a burnt spot. but that's just my experience.

No, when i water i try to only water onto the soil mass - i mist the leaves every now and again.
I don't think it can be that though as it is appearing on the brand new leaves...

Ferns are just an example where it could happen. Still, I consider this debunked.
